A solar string is a set of photovoltaic modules wired in series. The same current flows through each module. The voltages add. That is the whole definition, and most design mistakes are a refusal to take it literally. One weak module limits the current of the string. One extra module on a cold morning can push the added voltage past the inverter’s maximum. Parallel wiring is a different choice: currents add, and the voltage stays at the voltage of one branch. A string is the series branch.

What the solar string is doing electrically

Series means the current has one path. If a module is shaded hard, cracked, or simply pointed at a different part of the sky, it cannot pass the current the sunny modules would like to produce. Bypass diodes in the module’s junction box give the current a way around a shaded substring. They reduce the loss. They do not make the shaded module contribute. Shade is nonlinear for this reason. A small shadow can cost more than its share of the glass. The field evidence is in how shade affects PV output.

The voltage you design for is not the voltage at standard test conditions alone. Open-circuit voltage rises as the cells get colder. A string that is legal at 25°C can be over the inverter’s maximum input at dawn in winter, before the inverter has loaded the modules down. The coefficient is on the module datasheet. There is no universal number of modules per string. Count, then apply the cold coefficient, then compare with the inverter. Heat, which lowers power later in the day, is the other half of the sheet: how heat affects a solar module.

Maximum system voltage is a module rating as well as an inverter rating. The string has to respect both. A module listed for a given maximum system voltage is not a license to series modules until the sum exceeds what that module’s insulation was certified for. The cold open-circuit sum is the number to check, not the operating voltage at noon.

What a solar string is not

It is not “the solar system.” A system can have several strings, on one MPPT input or on several. Strings that share an input should see the same sun. An east string and a west string on one tracker fight each other. Separate inputs exist for that reason. Module-level electronics avoid a long series string of modules by converting at each module. They are a different architecture, not a string with smaller wire. The choice is in string inverter versus microinverter.

It is not a guarantee of equal modules. Mixing old and new modules, or different power classes, in one series string makes the lowest current the string current. The extra nameplate on the stronger modules is stranded. A flash file that shows one module well below its neighbors is a reason to keep it out of the string, not a reason to “average” it in. Why the test matters is in why solar panel testing matters.

It is not safe to open under load because you understand the diagram. The string is live in daylight. Disconnecting connectors to “check the string” is work for a trained person, with the disconnects open in the order the design requires. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s field rule is unchanged by how short the string is.

How strings are grouped

Arrangement What adds What constrains it
One series string Voltage Weakest-module current. Cold open-circuit voltage versus the inverter and the module’s maximum system voltage.
Two strings in parallel on one input Current, if the voltages match The input’s current rating, the fusing the design calls for, and matched length and orientation.
Two orientations Nothing useful if they share one series string Put them on separate MPPT inputs or on module-level electronics. Tilt and compass are in solar panel tilt and orientation.

Fuses, if the design uses them, protect wires against backfeed from parallel strings. A fuse is not an isolator and not a surge protector. This page does not give a fuse amp rating. The rating comes from the wire and the module series-fuse rating on the datasheet, applied by someone who does that calculation for a living. A combiner is the box where several strings meet, when the design has one. Do not treat the word string as the word combiner.

Monitoring should be able to show a dead string as a dead string. A single daily total hides it inside the weather. What that display is for is in what a solar monitoring system is. If one string is flat and the inverter is fine, the fault is in the string: shade, a connector, a diode, or a module. Replacing the inverter does not series the current again.

Label the strings in the drawing the same way they are labeled in the combiner. “String 2” on the portal has to mean the same two rails on the roof. A mismatch between the map and the wires turns the next fault into a longer visit than the fault itself required.

Frequently asked questions

How many solar panels are in a string?

As many as keep the cold open-circuit voltage under the inverter’s maximum and under the module’s maximum system voltage, and as many as keep the operating voltage inside the MPPT window on a hot day. The count is a calculation for those two modules and that inverter. There is no standard dozen.

Can I add one more panel to a solar string later?

Only after you repeat the cold-voltage check. One more module adds its open-circuit voltage. If the original design had little margin, the extra module is how a January morning exceeds the inverter. Matched power matters too. A new, stronger module in series with older ones will be limited by the older current.

Is a solar string dangerous if the inverter is off?

Yes, in daylight. The modules still produce voltage. Off at the inverter is not the same as an open DC disconnect and a string that has been made safe by a qualified person. Do not open connectors to prove the point.
